Cage fighting is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and in New Zealand champions are rising up from the underground.

It may look brutal and barbaric, but Kiwi fighters say it is all about skill and timing.

New Zealand’s best fighters are competing at the National Cage Warrior Championships in Christchurch and officials say the sport’s not only growing rapidly here but also world wide.

“[There’s a] huge world market, some of our boys have competed in Japan and have been very successful, so it is an ongoing thing and globally it is taking off and New Zealand is following close behind,” says Terry Hill, national MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) referee.

Cage fighting, also know as Mixed Martial Arts, has exploded in popularity in recent years attracting competitors, record crowds and TV viewership.
